RESEARCH AREAS

GENDER

Gender Studies

The Institute has identified gender studies as one of its priorities. Contrary to the general belief of gender parity in Northeast India, it has been gradually observed that the women are accorded much lower positions in the societies.

GENDER

Ethnicity, Peace and Conflict

The Northeast India has become almost synonymous with ethnic politics and its violent manifestations. Over the years, it has baffled the social scientists and other observers. The region has been experiencing mass mobilisations and extreme polarisations in ethnic lines. The ethnic homeland is the buzzword for communities small or big. Mobilisations around ethnic homeland often led to violence and armed conflicts.

GENDER

Regional Development

One of the major priorities of research in the Institute has been to understand the economy and the development processes of Northeast India. The Institute is expected to undertake research on problems and processes of social transformation and development of the region and to contribute to the formulation of strategies and programmes for speedier regional development. It also offers advisory and consultancy services to government and other agencies .

GENDER

Health and Education

With the emergence of health and education as two basic components of quality of life and markers of development, these have gained much importance in social science research agenda globally. Both have been identified as major thrust areas of research by the Institute since its inception. The Institute can now boast of carrying out some major path-breaking studies in the region with major policy implications.

GENDER

Governance

The scholars working on the Northeast India have often identified governance and democratic decentralisation as one of the most important research areas requiring in-depth understanding. A major portion of the region is administered under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Besides, customary laws and practices continue to be an integral part of the society in the region. This presents numerous challenges to governance.

GENDER

Livelihood and Environment

Three important and interrelated fields of study viz. Resource Mobilisation, Livelihood and Environment has been one of the major thrust areas of research at the Institute. Over the years, the Institute strove to understand the constraints of resource-based livelihoods particularly in the context of changing ecological concerns and concomitant changes in the policy regime. Addressing and analysing social security issues of myriad livelihood sectors have remained a priority for Institute.
